How tax and tip are calculated
Enter the bill subtotal before tax. Tax and tip are both calculated on that subtotal (the standard convention — tip isn't charged on tax), then added together to get the total, which is divided evenly by the number of people splitting it.
When to use itemized split
Switch to Itemized Split when the group didn't order equally — add each person, add each item with its price, and tick who shared it. Tax and tip are then divided proportionally based on how much each person actually ordered, not split evenly.
